New Cross Training Idea!

Cross training has been a major topic of discussion lately in our group as the cold weather and early darkness are sending us inside for more of our workouts.  We’ve kicked around a few types of strength training would be most beneficial to our running and TRX Suspension came up. Not knowing anything about TRX Suspension, I was really excited and nervous about trying something new. But what exactly is TRX Suspension?  Created by Navy SEALs, suspension training is a fitness regimen that works simultaneously on core strength, balance, flexibility, cardio, and whole body strengthening and toning.  The equipment is minimal- consisting of an anchor, webbing, carabiner, and handles with straps for your feet and hands. Simple and effective.

Suspension training requires the participant to use their own body weight against gravity, which is really hard….and extremely effective in generating a neuromuscular response that strengthens and tones.  The participant is able to place their body at different angles to increase or decrease the difficulty which makes this an fitness opportunity that can be done by everyone.  It’s also a really great way to get a cardiovascular workout without any high impact jarring on the joints.

A fellow Mama and I attended a 45 minute total body class at Unique Physique for Life in Gilbertsville, PA.  Unique Physique for Life is a private personal training studio that serves the greater Boyertown area.  Jessica Rapp, Owner, offers private and semi-private fitness training and nutrition services.

Once we started, there was no stopping for a full 45 minutes.  We rotated every minute between legs, arms, and abdominal exercises all while working the deep core muscles because we needed to keep the webbing straps tight and ourselves balanced at all times.  At one point I remember groaning in a plank position and it sounded very much like a wounded animal (or what I would imagine a wounded elephant-whale sounds like).  I don’t think I’ve ever been in a moment like that ever before where my body was working so hard and I was in such deep concentration (except for labor and delivery- now that’s no joke).

A fleeting smile – as soon as the camera went down I    was about to die from the whole body shakes. This TRX Suspension class showed me how weak I really am…

I think beauty of a suspension training workout is the simple fact that you are able to build strength, coordination, endurance, and flexibility all at the same time.  In speaking to a few fellow classmates, the consistent message was: do this if you want to get stronger.  Ladies stated that they feel stronger each class and adding a suspension training class to their workout routine 1-2 times a week has been highly beneficial to their healthy living goals.  Can’t argue with that.
