Good Lessons Learned on a Bad Run

Meet another Mama K.   We’ll call her Mama K-2


She’s the awesome one in the tribe that always knows exactly the right thing to say at exactly the right time. Things like “You don’t plan for failure.” when you’re staring at a 170# on the rack and “We’ve got this!” when you’re getting ready to run 9 miles in 17 degrees and “Wanna come over for a glass of wine?” when you need a break from reality.  She’s one of the most dedicated and hard working Mamas I know… as a nurse, Mama of 2, CrossFitter, and runner, she’s always gettin’ it done. Though she may be busy, she found herself wanting to share the experience she had on our 10 mile training run yesterday morning.

This is my first blog post so be gentle and forgiving with me.

Yesterday we were scheduled for a 10 mile training run on our path to our marathon (my 1st!) in April.  I had no real fears going into it.  I’ve done 10 miles plenty of times before.  I’ve done 8 half marathons and two weeks ago we did 9 miles. This was no big deal.  I was happy to be going out with my Soleful Mamas tribe and I knew I had tons of support.
BUT. . . (You knew that but was coming) this week was physically challenging for me.  We have been enjoying the flu/wheezing/aches/sinus issues all week in our home.  It’s been a challenge to sleep through the night, get up for squad zerodark30 (our 5:30am CrossFit class), and do any stretching.  Friday night came very quickly.  I was so thirsty and knew I needed to hydrate for my run.  Also, I felt like that old Nyquil commercial.  I needed something for coughing, aching, stuff head, fever, so I could rest medicine.  So, you guessed it. . . I took the Nyquil along with about 48 oz of water right before bed.  Although I slept well, it was interrupted by multiple trips to the bathroom because of all of that water. I hopped right out of bed, not feeling too bad.  Got to our starting point in good spirits feeling confident we could get this done!
We met at our usual spot in Pottstown so we could head out onto Riverfront Trail.
Things started out well. We broke into groups based on our speed – 2 speedsters doing 11 miles, then 2 groups of 4.  Our group of 4 began with our 1 mile run/1.5 mile walk interval.  We planned to keep a faster pace during our walk because we wanted to maintain under a 13 minute mile pace.  Our runs were a bit faster than normal for the first 2 miles.  Mama K -1 kept the pace for the run portion and I was the pacer for the walk portion of the interval.  Things were going well until…
MILE 3.  I’m drenched!!  I’m lightheaded!!  I think I may actually pass out!!  (As Mama T said – “You’re the nurse.  You can’t go down!!”)  I popped my fuel like candy but nothing helped.  I finally admit to my tribe that I’m in trouble and we decided to take a quick break.  I apologized a thousand times to which the response was each time:
We took a quick break so I could take a layer off and catch my breath.  Needless to say, all expectations of crushing this run in the 12-13 min/mile range was gone.  My new goals were just get it done and move forward at whatever pace possible.  Any forward movement toward the 10 mile goal was now considered success.
Mile 5 – we made it to the turn around point.  SUCCESS!!  I’ve never been a fan of out and backs, but lately the idea of being halfway done and no option other than getting it done and getting back to cars is working for me.
Mama T stayed with me as we walked the last 5 miles back to the cars.  She said “No man left behind!” when I protested and wanted her to run off with the others.  After getting some good old fashioned electrolytes in me from a gel, I felt a lot better. The world stopped spinning and my color returned to normal.
There was more success in that “run” even though there was not much running in that “run”.  Even though we walked about 7 miles of those 10 miles, I was on pace with a few of my half marathon finishes.  Thanks, Mama H, for pointing that out when we got back to the cars.  That translated to me that even on my bad days, we can get this done.  Without a doubt, we can get this marathon in AHEAD of the van of tears and well within the allotted marathon time limit.  Also, I bet if we could stick to our run/walk intervals, I will even PR my half marathon time.  EXCITING!
My biggest take away from yesterday – We are BETTER and STRONGER TOGETHER!  We support each other through the tough runs!  The love and support of our tribe is amazing – everyone carries each other through without fail.  When the girls knew I was struggling, I got texts to make sure we were still moving forward, Mama D drove back to a trail crossing to check on us, Mama K and Mama H stretched at the cars until we made it back.  We debriefed and that’s when Mama H told me that even with all the walking, this run was on target with my last half marathon pace.
So there you have it, good lessons are always learned on a bad run – No Nyquil the night before, don’t drink too much water right before bed, and always count on your tribe to get you through.  Time to start preparing for next week’s 12 miler!

  1. Your tribe is awesome!! I love the level of commitment you have to the run AND to each other. The way you support, encourage and “walk beside” each other is inspiring!! What you have is a gift to be treasured! Thanks for sharing your story in this post. Great job. By the way, as a fellow nurse, I had to laugh at the comment that you couldn’t go down. I’ve had similar experiences. I received a significant hit to my head and was not feeling right at all. My friends said. “You’re the nurse. Tell us what to do!” 😏😀😍 Fortunately, I was able to tell them what to do. Concussion resolved.👍🏼
